A CA firm in Fort had a website built in 2017. It still worked, technically. It also loaded slowly on phones, listed a partner who had left two years earlier, and had a contact form that had quietly stopped sending emails. Nobody knew how many enquiries had gone nowhere.
Websites rarely break in one dramatic moment. They age slowly until they start costing you work. These are the signs your website needs a redesign, plus a few that only look like it.
1. It’s hard to use on a phone
Most of your visitors are probably on mobile. Check Google Analytics by device category to see your own split. If text needs pinching to read, buttons sit too close together, or menus break on small screens, that’s the strongest sign on this list. Google also indexes the mobile version of your site first, so a poor mobile experience hurts rankings as well as visitors.
2. It loads slowly
Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights. It’s free and reports Core Web Vitals, Google’s measures of loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability. Poor scores across many pages usually point to an outdated theme, oversized images or too many plugins. One slow page is a fix. A slow site is often a rebuild.
3. You can’t update it yourself
If changing a phone number means emailing a developer and waiting a week, the site is working against you. A modern CMS like WordPress lets your team edit text, add blog posts and swap images without touching code.
4. It no longer matches your business
Services you’ve dropped. New services you never listed. A team page full of people who’ve moved on. When the site describes the business you were three years ago, visitors notice, and so do the prospects you’re pitching to.
5. Traffic is steady but enquiries have dropped
Steady traffic with falling enquiries usually points to the site itself. A weak call to action, a buried contact page, a form that asks for too much, or a design that doesn’t build trust can all cause it. Test that your forms actually deliver before you blame anything else.
6. It looks dated next to competitors
Open your three closest competitors’ sites, then yours. Be honest about which one you’d trust with your money. Visitors judge credibility in seconds, and a site that looks ten years old makes the business behind it look the same.
7. It isn’t secure
If browsers show “Not secure” beside your address, the site has no SSL certificate. That scares visitors off and should be fixed right away. An old CMS version, or plugins that no longer get security updates, are also red flags. Sometimes they’re reason enough to rebuild instead of patching.
8. It wasn’t built for search
Missing page titles, one generic page covering five services, no room for a blog, messy URLs. Some sites struggle to rank because of how they were built. A website redesign is the natural moment to fix the structure, giving each service its own page aimed at what people actually search for.
9. Your marketing has outgrown it
Sending Google Ads traffic to a homepage instead of a focused landing page wastes budget. If adding landing pages, online booking, WhatsApp chat or a product catalogue is a struggle, the platform is limiting your growth.
10. Your brand has changed
A new logo, new colours or a new positioning paired with an old website creates a mismatch everywhere customers meet you. Rebrands and redesigns work best when they’re done together.
When you don’t need a full redesign
Not every problem calls for a full website redesign. If the site runs on a modern platform, works well on mobile and has only one or two issues, targeted fixes cost far less. Typical examples are compressing images, rewriting weak copy, repairing a broken form or adding new service pages. A good developer should tell you which camp you’re in, even when the honest answer is a smaller project.
Protect your rankings during a website redesign
If your current site already gets organic traffic, a careless redesign can lose it. Keep URLs the same where you can and set up 301 redirects for any that change. Carry over page titles and content that already rank. Then watch Search Console closely for the first few weeks after launch.
